Did you know that DeWalt quietly released a new 20V MAX Brushless Cordless 1/2-in. Compact Stud and Joist Drill with FLEXVOLT Advantage!? They haven’t released much information on it yet, but we got our hands on one of the early releases and are testing it out for ourselves… so let us know what content you want to see with it and what questions you have and we will make it happen! In the meantime, let’s go over some of the key features of the new DCD444B.

What You Need to Know

The 20V Compact Stud and Joist Drill is engineered to finish up to 495 7/8″ holes on a single charge. When used with a hole saw it can drill up to 4″ and 2-9/16″ with a self-feed bit.

DeWalt already has 60V MAX FLEXVOLT Stud and Joist Drills (DCD470 and DCD471) on the market, which while they are powerful 60 volt tools, are also much larger and heavier than this new model. The DCD444B is a 20V equivalent, giving you a more compact and lightweight solution. This is great for those who need to drill multiple holes in a ceiling or at heights so that you don’t have to lug around a heavy 60V drill all day. If you’re a professional framer or contractor that is looking for a super powerful, multifunctional, and lightweight drill to take with you on the jobsite, this is a great one to go for.

E-Clutch System

The DCD444B has an integrated E-Clutch system that shuts the tool off in the event of a bind up situation. It senses the motion of the tool while in use and will stop in seconds to avoid any damage to the tool and bit. Once the E-Clutch is activated a red LED light will turn on to signal that this feature has turned on.

FLEXVOLT Advantage

The 20V Compact Stud and Joist Drill is a FLEXVOLT Advantage tool, meaning it can also be used with a 9.0Ah FLEXVOLT battery for up to 83% more power! FLEXVOLT Advantage tools are optimized to reach their peak performance when used with FLEXVOLT batteries, but they can also run on regular DeWalt 20V batteries if desired. Check out our earlier post about FLEXVOLT batteries to learn more about the benefits of FLEXVOLT Advantage and the difference between these and normal FLEXVOLT tools.

Not only does DeWalt have the 60V FLEXVOLT versions of the Compact Stud and Joist Drill, but they have also released a few variations of this 20V model. The DCD445B is a FLEXVOLT Advantage tool like the DCD444B, but it has a quick release chuck instead of a standard chuck. They also created an XR version with a quick change chuck, the DCD443B.
