The Hougen Mag Drills were the original electromagnetic portable drill presses, and are still made in Michigan even today. They’ve got a pretty wide range of options, from the super compact low profile HMD130, all the way up to the massive 4 speed 3”+ drilling HMD934, and everything in between. For at least the last few decades, however, the workhorse and most popular has remained the HMD904. This single speed 1-1/2” is for sure the standard we see out there on jobsites. For 2020 it gets an upgrade which solves one of the biggest design flaws we’ve seen as a repair center. Did you know that the electric cord connecting the drill motor to the base is not a secondary handle?

New HMD904 Upgrade

In addition to the HMD904 hiding the cord out of the way to prevent damages, this update also includes new ergonomic housing, an improved carrying case, shorter overall height and increased safety. The swivel base model, HMD904S, will get this same update within the next month or two. If you have had your current model for sometime now, which would not surprise us, there was also an update a few years ago, adding an LED light to the base and few other improvements and features.

The fabricator kits, HMD904K & HMD904SK, are being discontinued within the next few months and will not be getting the upgrade. The good news is, if you are looking to use the ½” chuck for twist drill bits, the HMD904 uses the same Slot Adapter ($46) and ½” Jacobs Chuck ($59).
