Since NPS ’19 we’ve been so excited to get the new Milwaukee MX tools in our hands. One of the most anticipated items on our list, the MX Handheld Core Drill. Any new cordless innovation sparks the question we get every day. How does it stack up to it’s corded/gas competition?

6″ Core Drill, Rig + 2 CP Batteries MXF301-2CXS ($3,999)

Keep in mind, this is the first cordless Core Drill, but it has a big list of features you’d expect from the FUEL line, such as ONE-KEY, plus more to accommodate your needs for safety and ease of use. The Performance Gauge, located just underneath the on-board LED Level assists with how much pressure is being applied by the user. If too much pressure is applied, Milwaukee’s patented Clutch design will trigger the Auto-Stop technology. This prevents any “kick-back” hand/wrist/shoulder injuries or getting knocked off a ladder completely on the job-site. Great with Wet Core Bits or Dry Core Bits either way for those super clean diamond core applications.

6″ Core Drill + 1 CP Battery MXF301 ($2,649)

The MX CP Battery pushes enough power to core up to 6″ holes in reinforced concrete Wet/Dry at up to 1,550 RPM’s. More specifically, the MX Core Drill offers two speeds. A convenient switch takes the guess work out of how much RPM’s you need. Simply select 1″ – 3″ or 3″ – 6″ (low/high), meaning 790 RPM or 1,550 RPM. Run time is pretty decent for a cordless Coring, especially one of this size. Measuring at 9 holes in 3″ cinder block and 5 holes in 6″ concrete slabs per battery.

Overall, is it a replacement? Possibly for some, service work where you may only need a few holes at a time Yes, professional like our friends at NCCC that focus on Concrete Cutting and Coring all day and can do 100+ cores in a day, it is Not a replacement but will be added as a punch out tool. Everyone agrees it is a great innovation and taking big strides in the right direction. Something else to consider, electric Core Drills require a good amount of power to run (many have 20 amp twist lock plug), which isn’t something that is readily available job to job. The MX Cordless Core Drill excels in convenience while offering the same quality holes, we would not be surprised to see these type of Core Drill become the standard as the MX batteries become common place.
